The Kansas City Council voted 9-0 to ban open carry in the largest city in Missouri. The vote was lead by the effort of Mayor Sly James.
The mayor said, “Our community is not a battleground” and that the open carry of guns is bad for business and can be intimidating for customers.
Scott Taylor, one of the city’s councilman, said “We’re proud to live in the Midwest, but I’m not sure we want to be the Wild West”.
The mayor then went on to echo Councilman Taylor and said that the Wild West had gun regulations. He said that guns were required to be turned into the sheriff when visitors came to town.
He even went as far as saying that guns have no place where the public gathers, places such as churches, shopping malls, and restaurants. The measure that was passed went to the full council on July 31.
A bill was passed by the Missouri General Assembly that would void any local ordinance that prohibits the open carry of those with a concealed carry permit. The bill was vetoed by Gov. Jay Nixon but the General Assembly is expected to override the veto this fall.
Mayor James:
We’re saying this does not make sense in the middle of Kansas City, Mo. If you want to do this out in a rural area, that’s cool. How much would you shop at the Plaza if you walk down there and every third person had a rifle on their back?
Also added to the bill was to make the city law conform to the state law regarding citizens who are intoxicated. The state law currently allows intoxicated people to carry guns as long as they are not acting discharging it or acting negligently. The city law, which banned drunk people from carrying, will now change to mirror the state law.
